Hydroponic plants growing in a greenhouse

5 Tips to Use Cocopeat for Hydroponic Growers

Cocopeat is a favorite among hydroponic and container growers. These five tips will help you get the most out of it.

1. Hydrate the Block Properly

Soak the compressed block in clean water until it fully expands, then break it up by hand so the texture is loose and even.

2. Rinse and Buffer if Needed

Rinse the cocopeat with clean water before planting. If you use a grade that is not pre-buffered, treat it with a calcium-magnesium solution so nutrients stay available to the roots.

3. Monitor EC and pH

Check the EC and pH of your feed and runoff regularly. Most crops do well when the pH stays in a slightly acidic range.

4. Avoid Overwatering

Cocopeat holds a lot of water. Water in smaller, more frequent amounts and make sure your containers drain well.

5. Mix for Better Aeration

For crops that need extra drainage, blend cocopeat with perlite or coarse coco chips.
